One of the modern tools that we will use is an image/video analysis software called ImageJ. Students will learn more about this in the pre-reading to a future lab (Lab 1b). However, Fiji (like ImageJ) should run on any system for which a Java 8 runtime is available (Solaris, Raspbian, etc.).
Caution: “Program Files” not recommended!
If you are installing ImageJ on Windows, we strongly recommend that you storeyour ImageJ.app directory somewhere in your user space(e.g., C:Users[your name]ImageJ.app) rather than in C:Program Files orother system-wide directory. If you move ImageJ.app to such a directory, modernversions of Windows will deny ImageJ write permission to its own directorystructure, preventing it from being able to update. We used to offer Debian packages of Fiji. Unfortunately, for several reasons,we are withdrawing support for these packages until such time as someone isable to maintain them properly, so please switch to using the Linux downloadsabove instead.

1) – Download and Install ImageJ Software 1
ImageJ is in the public domain. It can be freely downloaded and installed on any computer including those at schools, homes, and businesses.
Go to the ImageJ Download page , and download and install the application for your operating system.
- Click the ImageJ Download page and it will open in a new window. Click the link that appears directly below the name of your computer's operating system (e.g. Mac, Linux, Windows). This action will transfer a compressed file of the software to your computer. Your browser should automatically expand the file, creating an ImageJ folder on your computer's hard drive.
For more detailed instructions from the ImageJ website, click Installation Instructions then select your operating system.
2) – Update or Downgrade ImageJ 1
Double-click the ImageJ icon to launch the application and choose Help > Update > ImageJ.... A window will appear, telling you the version you are currently running and a list of upgrade versions. Choose the version you want to upgrade to (usually the most recent, or default version) and click OK. After the update downloads, you will need to re-launch ImageJ to run the new version.
